At Harvest Moon Farms we specialize in organic heirloom vegetables. An heirloom variety means that seeds of the plant have been passed along for at least 50 years or more.

We are also committed to growing as many
Ark varieties as possible. Ark varieties are endangered food items identified by Slow Food International. Slow Food was started in 1986 by Carlo Petrini when a McDonald’s was slated to open in Rome. Petrini established Slow Food’s forerunner, Arcigola, which had 62 founding members. Since 1986 Slow Food has grown to over 83,000 members in 122 countries. Slow Food's philosophy focuses on more mindful engagement in eating and food choices. The Ark of Taste was established to identify, and hopefully save, endangered food. The following is from Slow Food’s website:

75% of European food product diversity has been lost since 1900

93% of American food product diversity has been lost in the same time period

33% of livestock varieties have disappeared or are near disappearing

30,000 vegetable varieties have become extinct in the last century, and one more is lost every six hours

The mission of the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity is to organize and fund projects that defend our world’s heritage of agricultural biodiversity and gastronomic traditions.

We envision a new agricultural system that respects local cultural identities, the earth’s resources, sustainable animal husbandry, and the health of individual consumers.

Maintaining genetic diversity in our food system is imperative. Without genetic diversity pest and disease can wipe out plant and animal species. The Great Potato Famine in
Ireland in the 1800s was the product of having a non diverse potato crop and millions starved to death.

With the help of Seed Savers, a not for profit organization based in
Decorah, Iowa, we are partnering with these groups to help preserve as many Ark varieties as possible. We also work with area farmers who raise livestock and encourage them to focus on raising endangered animal breeds.
